What goes into the cost of installing air conditioning
All the prices on this page include VAT at 20% — the rate that applies to installing comfort cooling in a home, and the basis the quotes you receive will normally be on. Ask your installer whether your job qualifies for the zero rate that applies to an air-to-air heat pump fitted as an energy-saving measure (HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, until 31 March 2027).
The installed price of air conditioning is mostly the units, the labour to fit them, and the materials that connect indoor to outdoor — refrigerant pipe, cabling, brackets, trunking and drainage. A single wall split for one room is the simplest job; a multi-split serving several rooms from one condenser spreads the outdoor-unit cost but needs more pipework. Access matters a lot: a ground-floor unit with a short run is far cheaper than a high-level indoor unit needing scaffold and a long refrigerant route.

Is a multi-split cheaper than several single splits?
Often yes, per room — a multi-split shares one outdoor unit across several indoor heads, so you save on outdoor units and some labour. Single splits can be simpler and cheaper for one or two rooms, and let each room run fully independently.
What affects the installation price most?
The number and size of indoor units, whether it's single or multi-split, access to where the outdoor unit and pipework go, the length of the refrigerant run, and any electrical work. A proper survey prices these accurately — a calculator only estimates the range.
Does this include the unit or just labour?
